Mending a Broken Heart

When your heart is broken, you feel alone. It is as if all the happiness you felt from before have gone. For most, this can be one of the most painful things they have to endure. Broken hearts have a different way of testing your strength. It is difficult, for you have to deal with emotions. You can talk to your friends all day about it, but the pain will never go away. So how will you deal with it?

Years have taught me that no one knows your feelings better than you do. Many will say they understand because they went through the same thing. But no one will actually feel the pain for you (except for your mom, maybe). This is why you have to take matters into your own hands. Here are some of the things I did:

Cry:

Well even if you don’t want to, tears will surely flow. For me, crying helps, because it is a form of release. You can cry all you want, scream even. But understand that sooner or later, you have to stop. Crying helps, but the world will not stop because of the bucket of tears you shed. You have to realize that tears will only help you for a time, but it will never remove the pain.

Be busy:

After crying, redirect your energy to something productive. Read a book, clean the house, draw, write. You can also learn something new, like a new language, baking, biking and the like. Just anything that will keep you occupied. Aside from being productive, this will also keep you from thinking about the pain.

Love yourself:

When we are in pain, we forget to take care of ourselves. We just want to drown in our sorrow. We want to lie down all day while reminiscing the past, hoping to wake up from this terrible nightmare. But we have to keep in touch with reality. We have to get up, shower, eat and be happy. We need to do the things we love. We can hang out with friends, get a massage, and watch movies.

Aside from the things that will make you happy, you can also do things that will give you peace of mind. For some, this includes praying or going on a retreat. Some would rather meditate or attend yoga classes. Others find refuge in giving and doing charitable acts. These activities will give you a better perspective about life and what you are going through.

There is no one formula that will cure the brokenness you are going through. Only you can decide how to get over it. But it should not take too long. Life has so many wonderful things to offer. It will not stop because you are in pain.
