We Create Our Own Prison Cell
“Live your life to the fullest.” We
have heard this countless times and we have told ourselves that this is what we
are going to do. But how are we with this quest so far? Can we say with all
honesty that we are actually living life to the fullest?
Before we answer the question
above, we have to define what living to the fullest means for us. For most, it
is about having fun and partying with friends. But this is not the kind of life
I am referring to. I want to talk about
a life of fulfillment, continuous learning and being in awe with about
everything we discover everyday. Isn’t it nice to be surprised by life and to
realize that there are so many things that we do not know about? Living life to
the fullest for me means learning new things and continuously becoming the best
version of ourselves.
Why we’re not getting anywhere:
Although many of us know what we
want out of life, very few of us really have the guts to go after them. We want
to explore and do many things but they are outweighed by our excuses. I guess
what really holds us back is our worry about the future. We worry about what
will happen to us in ten, five or even two years if we do something we have
never done before.
Our Fears:
Where we are at the moment
becomes our comfort zone, a safe domain where we do not have to worry about a
thing. But it can also hinder us from exploring what’s out there. Exploring the
unknown becomes our greatest fear. What if we don’t find a job that is more
rewarding than what we have right now? What if we do not find a job at all?
What will our future be like? What if we discover something disappointing,
something that did not live up tour expectations?
Breaking out is a decision:
Living the life the way we want
to require a decision and that decision should come from us. At a certain
point, we need to give up something to venture into something new. The truth is
what’s new may not always be better. However, it is not always about what we
get when we embrace change, but how it makes us feel. Discovering something new
and knowing what it actually feels like to have that chance will strike out one
unclear question off our list, and that is ‘what if.’
All of us are given the chance to
live life to the fullest. However, very few of us take the chance. This is
because we create our own prison cell. We’d rather be in our prison cells and
stay within our comfort zones. But you can change all of that. All you need is
to make that choice.
