Dissecting Adele's Someone Like You

'Never mind I'll find someone like you...

If you have not heard this tune before, then maybe you have been in a place so remote that even music could not reach. This is the first line off of Adele's Someone Like You Hit. It has taken the world by storm, one tissue at a time.

The song evoked a lot of feelings. There is pain, letting go, holding on, envy and more. With all these feelings, there's no surprise why people are relating to it. It has not only become a theme song for bitter EXes, it has also become a song for lonely hearts, failed relationships and the painful side of love.

So what is it about this song that is so mesmerizing and hypnotic that you would want to listen to it even if you feel good? Well, I may not be a musician but I know a beautiful voice when I hear one. And Adele's voice is one you want to listen to, over and over again. Aside from that, the melody of the song is just so soothing. You don't have to understand the lyrics to listen to its music.

Let's take a look at the first few lines of the song, shall we:

I heard, that your settled down.
That you, found a girl and your married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things, I didn't give to you.

The first few lines is an introduction of what the song is about. She acknowledged that her old flame is married. But the second half of it has inclination of regret and jealousy. Regret because of the things that she was not able to do or give. Jealousy, because she wanted to be part of the realization of those dreams.

This is where the pain starts. Although you can be happy to see someone make his dreams come true, it is sad to know that you are not part of that realization, especially if you were with him when he was still drawing out his dream. It is like planning a house together but the other person built the house with someone else.

Old friend, why are you so shy?
It ain't like you to hold back or hide from the lie.

These lines confuse me. Of course the guy ain't the same after you broke up because you are strangers to each other again (no matter how intimate you were). This is especially true if the break up was sour.

But what is the second line about? Holding back or hiding from a lie, why? Is she saying that the guy still loves her? Or is she waiting for the guy to say sorry to her? Holding back back his feelings for her? Or is she waiting for the guy to attack her or blame her for the failed relationship?

Well maybe the guy is timid because he did not expect to see her and he does not know what to say because he moved on.

And then the dreaded line...

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited.
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I'd hoped you'd see my face & that you'd be reminded,
That for me, it isn't over.

For me, this is like wanting the guy to feel bad. She wants him to know that she is not okay and it is his fault. There was no closure for her.

However, she took her words back in the next lines.

Nevermind, I'll find someone like you.
I wish nothing but the best, for you too.
Don't forget me, I beg, I remember you said:-
"Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead"

There is nothing else she can do but wish him well. Or pretend that she is happy for him, or at least try to be happy for him. May be she will find her happiness too, with someone like his previous love. This is what I don't get. You broke up with the person, because clearly, it did not work. But here you are singing about finding the someone like him. Why? And how would her future love feel?

My favorite is the last line, "Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead. This is true. Sometimes love lasts, and the people that find lasting love are lucky. But it is also a risks, because if it does not last, it will HURT, badly.

You'd know, how the time flies.
Only yesterday, was the time of our lives.
We were born and raised in a summery haze.
Bound by the surprise of our glory days.

This is sweet memory. The time when she thought what they had would last forever. Memories are good, wonderful reminders. But don't dwell on them too much especially if you know you have to move on.

Then finally this...

Nothing compares, no worries or cares.
Regret's and mistakes they're memories made.
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

We all have our love stories. Some have turned a few chapters off. Others are just beginning to write them down. Not everyone lived happily ever after. But what is great about every failed relationship is the future and the hope that someday, you will find someone you can share a lasting love with.

As for Adele, I think she learned a lot from the heartache, moved on, wrote a song about it and made money. :)
