Dreams: The North Star
The story about how the three
kings found baby Jesus is among the most memorable Christmas stories shared
across generations. Imagine the difficulty of finding a new born at that time when
technology as we know it today was unheard of. But they were guided by a star.
They followed it, and we all know what happened next.
The story above gives us a lesson
about a few things in life. First, we must have a goal; something that we want
to pursue no matter what. Next is to have faith, nothing will happen with your
dreams if you do not believe that you will be able to achieve them. And most
importantly, it teaches us to act on our goals with a sense of urgency. The
kings would have not found Jesus if they procrastinated.
Dreams are our goals. They are
our north star. It is the direction which we should be heading. Without it, our
efforts would be meaningless. Have you tried leaving home without knowing where
you will go? Didn’t you feel lost? This is how it feels when you do not have a
goal, if you do not have something to look forward to. It is like playing a
basketball game without knowing where to shoot the ball.
Faith is needed in every goal.
For someone to start walking towards that goal, he must be able to believe that
he can achieve that goal. Believing in oneself is important in fulfilling
whatever one aspires for. Going back to the story, the Kings would not have
moved if they did not believe that the star would lead them to Jesus. They would
have missed their chance of finding who they were looking for if they doubted
the star. This is what will happen if we lack faith. If we do not believe that
fulfilling our dreams is possible, then it will never happen. Faith in our
dreams and in ourselves is essential to achieve our goals.
But dreams and faith are never
enough. We need to act with a sense of urgency. Acting on our dreams is crucial
because we will never get anywhere if we just imagine our dreams coming true. Moreover,
we need to ensure that we act with a sense of urgency. Action is good, but it
has to be with a sense of urgency. There are a lot of great ideas out there
that went down the drain because someone else acted on it faster. According to
Malcolm Gladwell, Xerox developed the mouse, but it did not revolutionized
modern day computers until Steve Jobs laid his eyes on it. It was not Steve
Jobs’ idea, but he was the one who acted on it with a degree of urgency. And
this is what Gladwell has been preaching, to act with urgency, because if you
don’t someone else will.
Dreams can give direction, but in
the end, it is still you who will steer the wheel. Decide to drive towards your
dreams now.
