I Won’t Hold You Back: Singing Your Farewell

Last Sunday, Aiza Seguirra sang one of the most heartbreaking classics of all time –at least in my opinion. She sang I won’t Hold You Back by Toto. The original rendition is very good but I prefer the sessionanista’s version. There is something about Aiza’s voice that will make a sad song even sadder (sniff).

The next thing I did was rush to my laptop and look for the lyrics of the song. Yes, I knew the melody but did not fully understand the song until yesterday. If you are not familiar with the lyrics, here it is courtesy of http://www.elyrics.net/read/t/toto-lyrics/i-won_t-hold-you-back-lyrics.html.

I Won't Hold You Back lyrics
Songwriters: Lukather, Steven;

If I had another chance tonight
I'd try to tell you that the things we had were right
Time can't erase the love we shared
But it gives me time to realize just how much you cared

Now you're gone, I'm really not the same
I guess I have myself to blame
Time can't erase the things we said
But it gives me time to realize that you're the one instead

You know I won't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found
You know I can't hold you back now

Now that I'm alone it gives me time
To think about the years that you were mine
Time can't erase the love we shared
But it gives me time to realize just how much you cared

You know I won't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found
Listen to me baby
You know I can't hold you back now

You know I won't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found
You know I can't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found

You know I can't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found
You know I can't hold you back now
The love we had just can't be found

For me the song is a confession of what the person is going through. I think most of us can relate to recalling a good relationship but has learned that it is time to let go. Goodbyes are not always about bitterness and hatred. Yes, most of us do not want a relationship to end. But not everything lasts forever.

The first stanza opens us to a relationship’s conclusion. I sense some regret here. Many of us feel that a failed relationship is a waste of time. I think of this too. But when you really reflect about what has transpired, it is not always the case. For that period, you felt loved and cared for, which is very important. It is nice to have that someone who is genuinely after your welfare. It’s just too bad that it has expiration.

The same stanza tells us about the gratefulness of the person to his partner.  It did not last but it was one of the beautiful times in his life. I guess, people ending a relationship feel hurt because of the good times they have to say goodbye to, knowing that the same thing will not happen between them in the future. If you did not have those wonderful moments, all you will ever feel after saying goodbye is relief- and that’s a pity, because that my friend is what a waste of time looks like.

I think the next part of the song is just about letting go and moving on. It is finality. The appreciation is there for the memories, but the love is gone. I believe you can only truly say goodbye to a person once the love is gone. You cannot ask a person to stay just because you are grateful to him or her. If the feeling is not the same, do the other person a favor and let him or her find his or her true happiness.
